Webmaster level: AllGoogle has said before that search engine optimization, or SEO, can be positive and constructive—and we're not the only ones. Effective search engine optimization can make a site more crawlable and make individual pages more accessible and easier to find. Search engine optimization includes things as simple as keyword research to ensure that the right words are on the page, not just industry jargon that normal people will never type.
“White hat” search engine optimizers often improve the usability of a site, help create great content, or make sites faster, which is good for both users and search engines. Good search engine optimization can also mean good marketing: thinking about creative ways to make a site more compelling, which can help with search engines as well as social media. The net result of making a great site is often greater awareness of that site on the web, which can translate into more people linking to or visiting a site.
The opposite of “white hat” SEO is something called “black hat webspam” (we say “webspam” to distinguish it from email spam). In the pursuit of higher rankings or traffic, a few sites use techniques that don’t benefit users, where the intent is to look for shortcuts or loopholes that would rank pages higher than they deserve to be ranked. We see all sorts of webspam techniques every day, from keyword stuffing to link schemes that attempt to propel sites higher in rankings.
The goal of many of our ranking changes is to help searchers find sites that provide a great user experience and fulfill their information needs. We also want the “good guys” making great sites for users, not just algorithms, to see their effort rewarded. To that end we’ve launched Panda changes that successfully returned higher-quality sites in search results. And earlier this year we launched a page layout algorithm that reduces rankings for sites that don’t make much content available “above the fold.”
In the next few days, we’re launching an important algorithm change targeted at webspam. The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s existing quality guidelines. We’ve always targeted webspam in our rankings, and this algorithm represents another improvement in our efforts to reduce webspam and promote high quality content. While we can't divulge specific signals because we don't want to give people a way to game our search results and worsen the experience for users, our advice for webmasters is to focus on creating high quality sites that create a good user experience and employ white hat SEO methods instead of engaging in aggressive webspam tactics.
Here’s an example of a webspam tactic like keyword stuffing taken from a site that will be affected by this change:
Of course, most sites affected by this change aren’t so blatant. Here’s an example of a site with unusual linking patterns that is also affected by this change. Notice that if you try to read the text aloud you’ll discover that the outgoing links are completely unrelated to the actual content, and in fact the page text has been “spun” beyond recognition:
Sites affected by this change might not be easily recognizable as spamming without deep analysis or expertise, but the common thread is that these sites are doing much more than white hat SEO; we believe they are engaging in webspam tactics to manipulate search engine rankings.
The change will go live for all languages at the same time. For context, the initial Panda change affected about 12% of queries to a significant degree; this algorithm affects about 3.1% of queries in English to a degree that a regular user might notice. The change affects roughly 3% of queries in languages such as German, Chinese, and Arabic, but the impact is higher in more heavily-spammed languages. For example, 5% of Polish queries change to a degree that a regular user might notice.
We want people doing white hat search engine optimization (or even no search engine optimization at all) to be free to focus on creating amazing, compelling web sites. As always, we’ll keep our ears open for feedback on ways to iterate and improve our ranking algorithms toward that goal.

«Oldest ‹Older 601 – 800 of 1044 Newer› Newest»Not a good update. In several niches sites that copied my content rank higher, including copying my images and ranking for those images. In other case a site that isn't even built yet 'coming soon' ranks higher than a site with unique quality content. I think Google is taking their eye off the ball, and putting too much attention on Facebook. I don't know. I just started making headway from the last update...
Matt, why aren't you addressing any of these comments? Obviously someone at Google is reading these comments because they have removed enough of them!
Remember when Google first started out. They asked website owners to put there Google search box on your site and you did to help them out. You did not get paid for this; you just did it out of kindness.
With this update they have not been kind to webmasters that had helped them grow.
Can you imagine how fast you could spread the word on facebook about new alternative search engine?
Example"duckduckgo.com" which doesn't that the instant results that so many despise that doesn't collect your information...
Only way Google will ever take notice of what webmasters are saying here is if they seen loss of users.
They wanted to end "SEO" and by all the complaints here they are probably happy they have succeeded.
We've been doing exactly what Google wants for 16 years-- we predate Google. We've never spammed, never did any black hat, and have worked extremely hard to provide a useful, free resource. We find, evaluate, and write descriptions for public record databases-- we now have over 60,000 paragraphs of original content. Google has ranked us #1 for public records since their inception, but first Panda, and now Penguin have punished us severely. First Panda downgraded our rankings for types of public records, then they blocked all our county pages from appearing, then they downgraded all of our state pages-- leaving significant traffic for our home page ranking only for public records, free public records, and publicrecords. All three got hit by Penguin this week.
Build a useful free site, improve it over time, follow all the rules and be rewarded? What a crock.
@DuckDuckGo:
Yeah, it's true, As Google has become ever more dominant and wealthy, it certainly seemed to change its attitude toward the smaller players.
Not so long ago, Google Adsense opened up all kinds of opportunities for small websites to easily make money; now it seems Google is doing all it can to thwart the little guy, and elevate the big guys.
Nothing stays the same forever...
@Tim Koster:
Man so sorry to hear about your losses. I'm in a similar situation, and it appears, so are many, many others.
Would be nice to have some sort of acknowledgement from Google about this but...the silence is deafening.
It would be nice to get rid of back linking. If back links didn't increase rank people wouldn't be doing it and would be focusing on their content for rank. Now google has given us a way to sabotage people that compete against us. Think about it.
After 6 years of working from home running a reputable online business that helped thousands of people buy or sell a business, my business is ruined over night!
Business has literally stopped since the 24th! Things are very stressful at home right now as we simply don't know what to do.
This has been our life for so long, our livelyhood and we have 4 kids depending on our success, which is now over!
We only practiced whitehat techniqes, 100% unique content of the highest quality, hence the reason Google ranked our site in the top positions for so long.
I challenge anyone at Google indicate where my site www.business-trader.com.au violates Google guideleines?
So now what Google? What the hell are we going to do?
I am assuming things are quite stressful in Google Headquaters ATM, but I assure you it is nothing compared to the stress levels at my place!!!!
I have always been a pretty avid supporter of Google, including its updates.
This update, however, has seen some pretty shocking results, with lots of really good quality sites being hammered, and spammy sites rising to the top.
To be honest though, I don't think that this is, as some claim, any sort of conspiracy to kill SEO & get more people to use PPC... Instead I think that this is just something that went wrong.
I must admit, I wouldn't like the job of rolling out updates that involve massive data sets, trying to ensure that there are no errors in either the databases, or any of the really complex algorithms that Google uses, many of which probably interact with each other in a myriad of ways - What a headache that must be!
The problem is though, that since the roll out of this update, and subsequent complaints, there has been serious breakdown in communications from Google’s side.
I honestly do feel that if Google came out with a statement like:
'Okay guys, obviously something has gone a bit wrong with this update! Bear with us, it will take a bit of time, but we will figure this problem out, don't worry'
I don't feel that Google would 'loose face' due to a statement like that - quite the opposite in fact!
People like to be kept informed of what is happening, and the silence over all this is leaving a massive gap in knowledge of what is going on at the moment, and this gap is being filled with fear, stress and from what I have read in these comments, anger.
Google/Matt, if there has been some sort of issue with the roll out of this update, why not just let everyone know, so that they can relax a bit?
At the end of the day, GOOGLE and you Matt, both tell webmasters that engaging with their online communities is vital, and dealing with complaints & customer service very important... yet here we have quite a large number of comments & complaints, many quite serious ones, with absolutely no reply from Google.
I still support Google, I think they (until now!) give the best results for just about all search terms, but please Google, don't turn into just another faceless corporation that doesn't seem to give a s*1t about anyone! Come on, keep us informed! You will more than likely find that you get much more respect for it, and there will be less panic too!
I can understand about the panic though, as pretty much over night, it seems like lots of legit businesses have been put in the position that feel they may have to close down their companies, and lose their jobs. For those people, I feel really sorry.
Google, as you are such a large part of the digital economy, you surely see that you have certain moral responsibilities to only roll out updates when they are ready, and if something does go wrong, to at least communicate with people? Especially in the current economic climate, when many businesses are already struggling!
So what’s it going to be Matt? Does this incident, and the lack of response to it, mark a turning point, that will see Google start to become more like all the other multinationals, or is Google going to continue be the great company that they have been up to this point, and stick to their 'don't be evil' motto? Because right now on the comments on this page, all I see is lots of folks worried that despite sticking to the webmaster guides, they may be about to lose their livelihoods.
Matt, you guys are normally much more responsive than this; please don’t let us all lose faith in you! Let us know what is going on, so people can sleep at night!
I guess it just goes to show that following the rules isn't good enough. My site has lots of unique content that I have cultivated over several years and is a benefit to thousands of people yet my business effectively got cut in half (traffic and sales) in one day. More B.S. from Google that sounds good but in reality just gives the bad guys more ways to hurt good sites like mine. Obviously Google isn't smart enough to come up with an algorithm that actually does what it says it will.
after one year of hard work and writing all the posts , now I'm out ! , my blog http://www.bramjcomputer.com
is not in google , in the last pages in google !!! , and all the sites that steal posts from me are in the top ! , what's the hell ?
my blog is dying !!!!!
waw,,google update algoritma again, it's very good and the immers must be smartly think abiut this all and find the way to avoid of this all
On Google.ca, search for: How to win the lottery
On 1st page, you'll find:
http://www.scotiabanknuitblanche.ca/exhibition.aspx?zone=B&mapID=14
Not even close to being on topic.
P.S. I don't actually expect Google to tell me how to win the lottery, just checking out this new algorithm and all.
There are some good results to the query, but also a lot of spammy affiliate sites that are looking for suckers to rip off, selling "lottery systems" that don't work. It's great that they're ranking so high on google.com (Sure, they're scamming people, but hey, at least they're on topic, right?):
www.howtowinthelotterytoday.com
www.lottomasterformula.info
and many many more
google quality content? search for the term "something" on google. www.something.com ranking on top 5 with one word on content! where's the QUALITY in there?
Dejected, destroyed and feels like committing suicide, because i lost my job and now have nothing to feed my children. Thanks for all that Matt, but remember Karma strikes back. What goes, comes around and im sure you'll do great in life with millions of people's curse for destroying their lives. Good job, may god help you!
Google has succeed... hahah
ask your self have you ever baught a link? comment spam ? anything at all?
All the websites ive seen from the comments do not deserve to be in the search engines...
id say 90% of you peoples website are junk or you have used shady methods for backlinking at some stage...
seriously ask yourself.. if you have??
Google has been clear about this for ALONG TIME.
seriously you all tried to GAME the system.. don't give us your sob stories...
admit it.
Most webmasters did not try to game the system. The fault lies with Google because they've relied so heavily on backlinks over the years. Many white-hatters have been forced to use grey or even black hat techniques in order to compete with competitors that were using black hat techniques to rank well.
Google should have developed this algorithm to penalize sites with spammy backlinks based on the time that those links were added. Google knows when links are added because they spider the sites, so they should penalize sites that add new backlinks from spammy neighborhoods and then release the penalty over a limited amount of time if no additional backlinks are added from spammy sites. This would make it clear that automated links will do a site more harm than good, but it would also give everybody the chance to build quality content and comply with Google's guidelines.
This would have been the right way to launch this algorithm, instead of just pushing everything into oblivion and alienating a significant number of webmasters.
What if this algorithm isn't rolled back and stays exactly the way that it is now? All of the webmasters that lost everything will just start doing negative SEO on all of their competitors and push everybody else into oblivion as well.
I just searched for "Cialis" which is pharmaceutical drug, and #9 is a web design company, while #10 is a site for the Starcraft video game. Neither of these sites have anything to do with Cialis. This is only one example of thousands of keyphrases that show up results unrelated to the term.
I'm beginning to wonder what the requirements are to become an engineer at Google.
Thanks for the update
http://www.virtualemployee.com/
Please see and let me where I have used any black hat SEO.
I have lost almost all of our ranking after this update. please must reply
@ unknown
I had good quality website with tons of contents that was good for users. I added fresh and new contents all the time. I didn't waste time building links only building contents.
Then when "GOOGLE" decided to rank you had to have tons of backlinks I lost all my rankings. For a long time I still didn't build links until I had no choice since I couldn't rank otherwise. "GOOGLE" force me into building these stupid links.
Now they drop you out of the serps for doing exactly what they wanted years ago, and want you to go back to building only contents.
If google was to ignore all backlinks previous and only penalize for new links, don't you think NEG SEO would happen in a big way? Only fair way to deal with this is just ignore links they don't like.
Of course Google never works that way. Someone copies your site, google penalizes the original site, not the site that copied. Someone spams your site with backlinks and google penalizes your site. I guess they think everyone has a budget like them that can remove all these bad links, or fill out hundreds of DMCA reports at a fee.
AND YES the serps are the worst ever and are definately not a good experience for the user.. They haven't been good since the first of the year but this is so bad all you can do is laugh..
I have to agree the new results are awful. Take the search term "Art", 3 of the top ten are for music producing equipment, sports related injuries.
To a google user, its pretty bad and definitely did not get any better.
So I type in a search phrase that I used to rank number one for on Google UK and now number 1 and 2 spots are Youtube videos - from a company that only sell their products in India! Way to go Matt - that should certainly help your user experience. And like many others, my ecommerce site has ranked well for a number of years has all but been de-indexed. Quality content, quality products - goodbye income.
The searches since the penguin update are atrocious, they are completely off target in most niches showing sites that were made sometimes 8 years ago and that have never ever been updated. Legitimate sites that have original content and domains that are registered for 5 years plus don't even get a look in now. I think Google needs to rethink the Penguin update and find another way to get rid of the spam sites. All they are doing at the moment is penalizing legitimate webmasters.
Bing beckons.
Google are also losing money on advertising and by taking out a lot of legitimate adsense sites they are actually shooting themselves in the foot and will upset both advertisers and webmasters. Chapter 11 maybe sooner than they think.

I just informed FTC about this. Now, everyone can damage other people's websites by doing Negative SEO. Googles algorithm allows this. This is against ANTI TRUST LAW in US. Google is a monompoly company and it misused its monopolic position to let others punish other peoples websites via the system which Google allows.
Here is the link: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/
There are 6 steps you should follow to complain Google at Federal Trade Comission. It will only take 5 minutes.
@duckduckgo thanks for sharing duckduckgo .com I never knew about it before, and I have to say I have found my daily favorite search engine.
LOL, anyone affected by the update go and check out this video;
http://www.funnyutubevideos.net/2012/04/hitlers-reaction-to-recent-google.html
I m not able to find what i m looking for. This was a bad update from google. Google is just giving priorities to old sites irrespective of quality content.
Google should take this update back.
haha! Loved the video - Someone finally got creatively funny with all this. ( did I just cackle?)
If it goes viral it could be the best way to get Big G's attention yet!
Thank you, Now, i know why my link : "http://www.xamthon.info/kontes/sepeda-motor-injeksi-irit-harga-terbaik-cuma-honda" in seo contest is lost. Thank you for admin.... i will make changing in my article, may admin google can forgive me.....

So, what has Google done well? Up to now it has been Internet search results and driving revenue from them. However, now it seems the Google flop culture is going to screw that up also.
I never thought I would say this but I think my company will be better served going back to more traditional forms of marketing. Our customers are not "social" in nature for our product offering therefore we will not get any benefit from that avenue.
Sponsored ads on search pages are not trusted by our consumer base since so many crap companies operate there. Organic was where the quality was found and now that has been killed off..
Looking at our traffic today, most of the relevant hits we are getting are from Bing and Yahoo, the visitors coming in from Google are arriving via some totally irrelevant search terms and the bounce rate for Google visitors is the highest it has ever been. Seems my good titles have been good at telling Google what terms to rank my pages for and now that Google thinks it can understand my content better than I can, it has decided to place my pages in the results of searches that are completely off topic.
So What does this ultimately say?? This info tells me Bing searchers are happy, Google searchers are not.
Ok so I laughed for the first time in a few days with that video. Things are REALLY tense here at the house with no money coming in. There is a silver lining and its Called duckduckgo.com , there is some GREAT news. I just typed in a MAJOR keyword for my websites and ALL of them show my websites on page 1!!! So the key to this is shift EVERYTHING to duckduckgo.com!! Just as altavista owned the search engine world in 1995, and google took it away from them, now duckduckgo.com can do the same! If we can make the defacto search engine duckduckgo..it will change EVERYTHING! There IS HOPE! go to the DUCK!
Well, this update or whatever JOKE this is, marks the Beginning of the End for Google. First of, this change was totally uncalled for. Second, it has punished good, hard-working guys like me publishing original, hand written content. My site, Phone Arena India was hit for no reasons. Check it out and tell me what's spammy about this site?
Guys! We NEED to promote duckduckgo.com wherever you go. Make a post on your facebook.com account how google is not working well anymore and a friend told you about duckduckgo and you tried it, and it works GREAT! That 50, 100, 500 friends will tell their 50, 100, 500+ friends and so on. Also I run a computer repair shop. With my customers permission I will change their homepage to duckduckgo.com, and show them how great it is. Google ONLY has the power WE the people give them! If everyone tomorrow stopped using google, they would be a "dead DUCK!" ;)
@Brainstormer
Your result is same as mine (or maybe with others too)
For example, when I searched for:
"Getting a taste of the Ice Cream Sandwich is something most, if not all, Android smartphone users have been anxiously waiting for. Those who couldn’t wait have probably already taken the custom ROM route while the rest have probably been waiting patiently for the official updates."
with quotes, it gave the result of the blog who copied your content (if I'm not wrong) at #1 and yours on #2, which should be the "vice versa"!
Again when I searched for:
"List of Phones Getting Ice Cream Sandwich"
The same thing happened.
But you are lucky enough to be found within SERPs. In my case, nothing on SERPs. For example, try searching for:
"Blogger SEO Update: Get Ready to Add Meta Tags"
It's the title of one of my recent blog posts, but see what's on #1. That's not my blog!
Okay, yes I have a keyword match domain, but I also have one of the very best sites in my nice with hand written reviews. Yes I used meta tags (you're supposed to) so I don't know if using keywords in your meta tags is considered over-optimization or not now.
I used Copyscape religiously and many on Ebay or scrappers do steal my content (because it's good content) without asking for my permission of course. Why is Google punishing "all" my pages now, yet awarding spammy blogspots, squidoos, and scrapper sites now.
My site is 100% unique written content (I'm an engineer in my field, so my knowledge about this niche is high, therefore I write great, unique conent). Why are the blackhat or spammy, scrappers, and thin sites winning, but my site falls off a cliff?
Is it because I add Ebay ads instead of Google Adsense? If it was a penalty for exact domain matches, why is it not just a homepage penalty. None of my other site pages are a direct domain match for their they keywords?
There are a lot of high quality sites that have their keywords in their domain. I think using an exact domain match as a penalty signal is just silly. Surely there must be better ways to detecting less quality sites then making broad, blanket penalties such as this.

I think, with this update, webmaster will busy put their competitor link in website spam than write good quality content.
That's only my opinion
Many of the people here are talking about exact match domains being punished, but when you search the words "Cheap Caribbean" the number one site that comes up is Cheapcaribbean.com! I don't think you get anymore exact match than that! But then they do pay for Adwords! Google has a double standard here, So If I want to rank again, I need to pay for Adwords?
Hey Matt I have a deal for you! I will buy you that new car you want, and you put me back on page 1. I know this is a little bit over the top, but this is how it feels!!
@duckduckgo
I agree with you.
Anything would have been better than what they've done with this update.
It seems like the thinking behind this is that spammy backlinks equal no quality content. The algorithm should check the backlinks, then look at the actual web site before pushing it off into oblivion. Yes, their are sites with thousands of spammy backlinks that look awful with doorway pages, no content, etc.. and they could be pushed off into oblivion because they were built in 10 minutes for the sole purpose of ranking well quickly.
BUT, their are also high quality sites with hundreds of content packed pages that have some spammy backlinks, and these sites do not deserve to be reduced to nothing.
Google: Please kill your Penguin update!
If we all do this, maybe it will help! But we don't know unless we all do it! Please sign, it only takes a minute!

Why was my site punished? Here is an example of my content:
Coffee machines, coffee brewing machines and coffee making machines are used for brewing coffee in various quantities. Here at coffee flying dot geewiz(sic), we offer coffee machines for restaurants and banquets. We also have a wide assortment of coffee brewing machines for home use and even a mobile coffee maker!
You are bound to find a coffee making machine for your specific need at one of our links below.
Coffee machine for Home use
Coffee machine for Restaurant use
Coffee machine for Office Use
Coffee machine for Mobile use
In the meta - keywords box I have: Coffee machine, coffee brewing machine, coffeemaker, restaurant coffee machine, mobile coffee maker, etc..
On my pages are links a website I have where I offer COFFEE, another where I offer various coffee supplies and yet another where we provide rental, leasing, delivery and set-up for coffee machines and events (weddings, banquets, luncheons, etc)
These websites are not all owned by the same corporation, so, I cannot make them all one site, or all one company. But all the sites are linked together with one link.
Am I guilty of keyword stuffing? Webspam? Link scheming? All of my sites are relevant to each other.
I’m not linking home loans to exercise equipment to Viagra to porn to Canadian pharmaceuticals.
None of my sites had ranking on coffee machine or coffee maker. My ranking existed with coffee machine or coffee maker with the word restaurant or commercial, industrial before it or after it, etc.
I do not understand why I would be punished and lose all ranking. My sites have relevance, I sell a legitimate product that has various uses, and can be defined or searched for in various ways.
Our offsite links are from our fans on FB and our demo videos on YouTube. Could these links be hurting my site, even though they are beneficial to our customers?
If I sold Private Aircraft, would it be wrong if I also sold parts, service, lessons, storage, charter service, rental, leasing? And linked all THOSE sites together?
I KNOW that doing this is beneficial to my web presence, based on my revenue and my feedback from my customers.
So, any suggestions?
Webmasters, we love quality and relevant content. Do not spam, just write articles and your audience will love it.
your google
and reality, my best articles disappeared from search results just because they were best :) only thing that is good, is fact that google traffic was only 1/3 to them, other webs that linked to my content (they are stupid ? google is smarter than humans :)) still are sending people.
Reality is above (worst punishment I get for my best content - even people coppied whole content of my site - it means for google that is bad :)) average content is still ok for google. But remember, idea with google is fine. To say to webmasters that more important is content than technique, if google wants to invest irrelevant results in exchange for webmaster education, ok. :) But there is small problem, there are tons of webmasters, that do not know about seo and just are exchanging link, submitting sites to directories and all the "normal knowledge" about sites. And they are penalized
Sorry to hear that the students at Brooklyn Amity School suffer from hair loss. The school is listed #8 for Propecia (hair loss drug).
Get it together Google.. and roll this penguin back!
So it looks like the tide has already starting to turn;
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/27/technology/google-antitrust-inquiry-advances.html?_r=4&pagewanted=1&hp
It has in Austrailia and it probably will here in the UK too.
Danny Sullivan is obviously brown nosing on this subject. As mentioned anything Google does is obviously a clever guise for something that performs in there best interests. Like the issue of the Google Docs form to appeal.
It would be nice to actually break down the websites that were affected and really look for the reason they have been pumped off.
Not to mention the extra Adwords business but Adsense publishers have known for years delivering a crappy user experience bumped up ad clicks.
I really wonder how many people are clicking back on their browsers after finding useless information and then clicking paid ads? I really wonder how more relevant the advertisments are now compared with the search organic results?
Sounds like a far out accusation, but like I have said before is a company with the size that has sheer computing power Google have likely to make a desicion where their profits are going to be damaged as a result of the decisions they make? very unlikely... The likelyhood is they benefit greatly.
Google are the experts at split testing conversions and scraping things that are not in their best interests.
Big G the message is loud and clear, pull the plug and put the little penguin out of its misery, and reverse the changes back; play nice and "don't be evil". Our e-commerce site that sells baby clothes is nowhere to be found from prior page #1.
On the positive note, I tried duckduckgo.com and we are on the page 1 where we belong, I like it way better!
I noticed lately a lot of old press releases coming up (from 2006, 2008 etc) for my searched key word terms. Totally outdated sources with broken links. I guess there is still more updating to do...
I'm so sad that over 6000 views now only get 900, damn, and the worst is that pages like articulo.org or zimbio.com, pages that have copied my articles, they are now in the top of the results, !with my own original articles!, damn
Someone tell me ¿do you believe this to return to normal?
I had planned to go to college in July, but this has ruined me
It's obvious to anyone with a brain that the Google "Penguin" update is a major disaster for many websites. But do we hear a peep from Matt & company after more than 650 anguished comments on this post???
NOoooooo, not a peep from a Google employee here. Are they all on vacation, or just tone-deaf to the pleas for help from devastated webmasters?
Who knows? Who cares? It sure seems that Google doesn't care!
The way I understand this update is this: We don't care that the search results are much much worse. All that matters is that we taught those "bad" small business owners a lesson, even if it was at the expense of the average user doing searches on Google - The ones that are now seeing unrelated search results. High fives!
P.S. Don't kid yourself - This update IS NOT an over-optimization penalty; it's a "slight" optimization penalty. What you did was make your search results worse and, at the same time, wiped out a whole bunch of great sites that did what any small business would naturally do - Try to make themselves stand out.
I'm all for eliminating webspam, but this is the wrong way to do it. Now there's even spammier sites ranking well.
Again, if anybody's reading my comment, let me emphasize that this IS NOT an over-optimization penalty. Let's call it what it really is - A "slight" optimization penalty.

I think Cutt's new algorithms are reasonable and accepted in principle. In reality, it doesn't work as it is. For instance, some sites don't have good quality contents, but they are ranked the top on Google's search engine while my site with similar contents is rank the bottom, even not indexed. The matter is Google's team should check its new algorithms to get good results in theory and in real life.
A long time ago Google used to be a Searh Engine, now you're just big business. This and previous updates have little or nothing to do with improving serps. It's all about your next quarter results.
You spam us all the time, with your Adwords ads, your emails to get on Google plus, or to invite more people into GMAIL.
You don't like too many ads above the fold? Why don't you give the example and remove yours?
With your Webmasters tools and Analytics, your PR guy Matt Cutts, you've fooled millions of webmasters. Making them believe you care.
I just tested this http://duckduckgo.com search engine, and it's amazing how good the results they serve are. It just proves you guys made billions from something that's really not that hard to do. You guys were in the right place at thje right time but if you continue like this you can bet that my grand children won't "google" much.
Go duckduckgo.com !!!!
I have never felt so compelled to leave a negative comment ever. And I mm usually the quiet and reserved guy who keeps his mouth shut.
But now I am so stressed about my lost traffic to my websites which lead to a lost of my income. I wasn't making millions of dollars. Just a few thousand a month and it was enough for me to fulfill my travel dreams.
I now have scraped content outranking all the hard work I've done on my websites.
I rely on my travel websites to help generate income so that I can continue to do what I love. Travel is my passion. I slaved away in offices working for pennies before. My generated income allowed me to be free and for 2 years I enjoyed it. And now it's game over for me. I'm 40 years old and I have to get back into the rat race.
Thank you for ruining my life and my dream.
File our complaint here https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ and take this monopoly down. dont let google underestimate webmaster like us. we are no slave of google!
Just to cancel out some of the above, my main site was at 20k pageviews a day before and after this update, I didn't notice any change. But then, it never ranked above #5 for anything.
Conversely one of my old sites that I pay no attention to at all suddenly shot up from 1500 to 4000 pageviews a day overnight. Google clearly loves old, outdated, neglected and abandoned websites.
Ok google, you must be wise...spam is bad but eliminate all link signal are not wise...you kill relevancy balance on your search quality itself as you know webmaster who build backlink actually that care about their website and Webmaster that does't care about their site and does't know what is SEO are the one who provide poor quality content itself. As a proof all website platform now build as SE friendly ( How can you talk not to care about SEO?)
Now what? Even with blank page you can rank no 1 on google:
try search "something" on google.com
What i see from this update organic result now dominated by either big sites ,irrelevant result, junk result(spun, duplicate or even empty page).
Another source of filling a complaint, And guess what they are ranking in google, I have had 11 hits in just a few hours!
http://google.pissedconsumer.com/google-distroyed-my-business-20120428315294.html
I still hope it will rebound somehow in a couple days. Otherwise there can't be any justification for it... If it doesn't, then Google just feeds us cr... by presenting those examples in Matt's blog. I have not done no such thing, ever. Never bought any links either, just exchanges... and I link out to relevant sites I like without even asking for reciprocation - well, they enjoy it, I guess, but my rationale here was that that's what good content is, posting links to good relevant sources. I think it's time for Google to admit it too (there was a rumor years ago as if Google liked it so, don't believe it any more)... Well, anyway, I'm the very kind of White Hat SEO that they refer to, my site scores 93 in Google's speed test (assuming they really care about it, like they say they do), have been on the first page for product search and a couple more keyphrases - whithin the last 2 days dropped from 3.000 impressions to 250 (!). Is it just because I'm a relatively new player in the field (just 2 years or so), or, maybe because some nuts posts hundreds of links to my site which I never asked for or paid for and cannot make them take the links down either? If that's all what affected my rankings, well, com'n Google, you should know better than that! Because it's the stone age. We are screwed if that's all what Google's algorithms amount to!
There was this term, Google Dance... It still looks like it, so far at least. Except it's more like a Carnival, than just a dance!
guys duckduckgo.com !!
When i do search for couple of "reviews" related queries in Home, Kitchen appliances, Electronics and other topics in .co.uk, i could able to find only around 10 site is listed on top 10 results, everybody can find this and only 2 of them have really reviews about what we searches, the main problem is the site who dominates all the first places in all the "review" related queries ask the user to pay the fee to read their review, this is what the Compelling content the Google is looking for?
Still i strongly believe that goole observes the "User Behaviour", "Bounce Rate" to determine the quality of their new algorithm.
If their team spends some time and watch the SERP's for some time then they will know what damage they given to the public.a
I posted a comment on the duckduckgo.com facebook page and had a response within 5 minutes.
There are over 660 comments here and NOTHING from Google!
I dont know about you guys, but I like the duck :0)

wow, I appreciate the another Great step toward making Web Better.
website with spam backlink right now were going down the serp. just want to know what if someone blast there competitor website using senuke x or xrumer? will this website be punish too because of spam backlink?
i have seen result for very common search query showing two pages ranking on number 1 and 2 from two different domains. Both the sites are owned by just one person. Can you work out a reason to have different content on two different pages of different domain. They are running 5-7 such sites with keyword rich domains just to make money from adsense.
I dont want to write this publicly. You can contact me on my mail address i will give you the search term and you automatically will get to know about the sites I am writing.
To Google team,
Honestly, I have never seen your results so bad and irrelevant. You made some sweeping and major errors here.
1) You assume all websites that build links are bad. That is VERY wrong. Many websites that build links are good, and so much better than your results now. A lot of the top results are low quality of pure SPAM.
2) You are now endorsing Negative SEO, because by punishing websites for their links as Penguin as shown, you merely encourage the real spammers to spamlink websites now and destroy them. It's very easy to do so now.
What is your REAL AGENDA in doing all this? Can we have an honest statement from you guys for once?
I used to support you guys because I believed you stood up for the little guy, but I will not support or trust you guys anymore. All you've done so far is to destroy the trust that a lot of people once had in you.
Pride comes before a fall. I know it is hard to admit you got this update really wrong, but everyone makes mistakes. It is what you learn from your mistakes that count.
Do you even realize when you are wrong?
I have to agree, this was the worst update in years. Many quality sites got deranked (even authority sites that existed for years and are daily updated). Yet, many scrapers are still ranking well - that's the spam you should be fighting
All the authority sites have been affected, all I can see now when I type something in Google search is low quality sites with a small amount of indexed websites and links made with automatic SEO programs.
You, Google Spam team, have annihilated small businesses in favor of big companies. It looks like Google does not believe it competition, so this will be a monopoly.
Thanks a lot Matt for making user experience a lot worse. That's the way to go! History is about to repeat...

Quality!!!!
Google talks about user experience and not a single comment on a thread where people are screaming for a response!
I was feeling sorry for some of the folks posting here.... UNTIL I started noticing the type of search queries a lot of the people in this thread were upset about... [how to win the lottery], [how to make money online], [something] etc...
Real quality sites target those type of queries...
Come on Matt/Google, 600+ angry comments and not a word from Google?
I bet if this trend is not reversed then the world should say welcome to negative SEO! Senuke x & xrumer just got hotter.
Come on google you should know better than this...... Thanks to you, I just learnt about http://duckduckgo.com and I will use them more often now.
Goodluck Google.oo
@lots0
Do sites that have no content and are under maintenance provide the user what the are searching for?
People are searching for that stuff, these are just examples of the messy serps.
If you think they are spammy subjects maybe google shouldn't show any results for them terms.
You are a fool!
hi, as a webmaster welcoming your updates always, its keep our work exciting, but this i really not going to appreciate your work..search giant you are not going to right way..The search system become worst there is no synonyms, LSI, landing page detection, interlinking effects of content surrounded texts, Alt tags headings of web page..Google journey of 10 years in search industry now seems questioning on quality ? how google justify his credentials in term of search .. think about it, alternatives always available for everything ..so bing, yahoo or may be in next decades who stand where don't know !
Dear Google team,
How far is duplicate content being punished with this new update? My site with inspirational quotes does not appear in search results at all on Google when it used to, but only for some posts on Bing and Yahoo.
It is a blogspot blog and it is highly likely I pinged it on Pingomatic with the .co.uk domain redirect rather than the .com, because blogger is now redirecting to 'local' domains. This was accidental, I did not realise it would affect anything. Blogspot, blogger.com is owned by Google as well, which makes me think what is going on here?
How would this be rectified? Delete those posts and start again?
My quotes blog is small and I am still learning things etc but for others from reading the comments, they have really been hurt and my sympathies are with you. I don't understand: What are webmasters supposed to do so they have a good quality site that can rank on search engines?
Here are some more bloopers
Search for "Something"
search for "Python Hosting"
search for "heartburn remedies" and look at 8th result - this is the exact type of website that this update was supposed to thwart.
There must be countless others which might not be identifiable by common searcher
Hi Matt,
Who'll be effected to this? The site where the link goes or the site who gave the link, or both?
This is good, It's hard to write a great quality content and some people even hire other people to write for them. So this one is really good.
As a blogger, this means less unrelated or out of my niche offers. A lot of advertisers want to advertise on my blog even it's a travel blog, yet they're selling furniture. Good thing I rejected it. LOL
Thanks!
Is google a search engine or a time-travelling machine, I wanted to search about donkeys so I searched "Mongolian Donkey" google shows me a blog post published in 2001 as the first result.
I noticed interesting change. Your new algorithm or antispam filter or combination of both works worse with synonyms. Now result prefere much more exact titles than on page content.
Just a bullshit update!!! You should go back to school again!!! http://www.change.org/petitions/google-please-kill-your-penguin-update-l

OPEN YOUR EYES!!!
The Panda updates have been put in place to target the tens of thousands of website owners who have used SEO companies to help them appear on any search results and FORCE them to hire Google via Adwords of Adsense to drive traffic.
This is in an effort to show Google's shareholders that sales are up because of all the scrambling webmasters who are looking to the plug holes on their fast-sinking ships, have now have now resorted to Google for those services.
But remember, Google: you have done this at the expense of search results. Your search results are no longer relevant and turn out garbage. You have sacrificed your footing for a quick buck. Your stocks maybe rising temporarily, but this will soon end when the many that are searching, realize that Google's search results are now garbage and they will go to Bing, because their search results are relevant.
You may be lining your pockets now, but once you have lost the confidence of the end users, your fate will be sealed and you will follow in the footsteps of other search engines like AltaVista or Yahoo who disappeared or fell from being the preferred search engine, just because they got too cocky and full of pride.
With great power comes great responsibility. Tens of thousands of businesses that employ a number of people are now facing the inevitable outcome of having to close their doors because of your actions. Your hands are stained with blood and the pain that you have caused. At least one has already comitted suicide. Shame on you Google and everyone that works there for your greed.
Looks like uncle am is getting ready to take Google to court! I encourage everyone to write a letter to Beth Wilkinson care of her firm (listed in the article) and describe your experiences. This will assist her greatly in her investigation.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/27/technology/google-antitrust-inquiry-advances.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&partner=yahoofinance
I think everyone needs to do their part so this BS stops. This company is taking food out of our children's mouths to serve their own agenda by abusing the power they have gained in the search market.
Please take a moment to write a letter and send it to Mrs. Wilkinson about your situation and provide the examples you cite. If you do this, then there is a good chance she will be successful in her anti-trust lawsuit against Google.
All it takes is one hour and a 45 cent stamp to make a difference.
For those who have yet to be informed regarding the possible anti-trust case against Google, please read the below and take 5 minutes of your time to file a complaint with the FTC.
Here's are the details:
According to NY times, Google will be reviewed by the FTC
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/27/technology/google-antitrust-inquiry-advances.html?_r=3&pagewanted=1&hp
For those who suffered dearly on this update - business wrecked, site missing from listing, loss in revenue, you should know that you can report this to the FTC.
Here goes
https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/
The complaints will carry weight if it's done in bulk.
LET'S REPORT THIS TO THE FTC!
PASS THIS MESSAGE AROUND!!
QUOTE FROM FTC WEBSITE:
The Federal Trade Commission, the nation's consumer protection agency, collects complaints about companies, business practices, identity theft, and episodes of violence in the media.
Why: Your complaints can help us detect patterns of wrong-doing, and lead to investigations and prosecutions. The FTC enters all complaints it receives into Consumer Sentinel, a secure online database that is used by thousands of civil and criminal law enforcement authorities worldwide. The FTC does not resolve individual consumer complaints.
Please note the last line: "The FTC does not resolve individual consumer complaints." - like I have mentioned before, the complaints will carry weight if it's done in bulk.
SO PASS THE MESSAGE AROUND!!
On April 24th, everything changed... I was dominating Google with almost each keyword. They all disappeared. The pages are still indexed but ranking is nowhere to be seen.

HELP! Need suggestions please
I think Christina Miller has a great I idea.
Attorney Beth A. Wilkinson, the same one who is filing a lawsuit against Google, on behalf of the FTC, is probably looking for more evidence for the FTC case. They are filing this lawsuit because of Google Monopoly strategies, privacy issues, and taking out the little guy of the searches so they can sell there products.
If we bring more evidence like what has happened to thousands of small companies and has affected millions of lives because of jobs lost, this lawyer can probably due some real damage. Remember, Google is trying to coerce people to use Google adwords. The only thing that is left in the organic searches is Big corps and thin sights with little substance.
HERE is her email. Let her know what happened to you and give her a link to this forum and many others that are talking about this subject.

This is not another step to reward high quality sites, this is another step to ruin our hard work and money. We spen thousands of dollars as for server and developing a site, we worked daily morning and night but you guys in overnight you take down all of our content. Who is responsible for this one of my site with 6K visitors per day reduced to 100 visitors in over night. God is there google, I lost all my hope business, money, now am looking like man in middle of forest I don't know where to go.
Is anyone from duckduckgo.com following up these posts? Please provide us banners for your search engine. All of us are ready to promote your banners in our websites free of cost.
I noticed something else intersting today. Start typing duckduck in Chrome browser. Google will suggest the following website http://duckduckgoose.com/.
I guess someone in Google is working overtime to delete comments here, but no one has time to reply to any of the concerned webmasters. Both suprising and not.
Well here's a good example in improving user experience. Our baby clothes website used to rank well for "fashion baby" keyword (we didn't target it) and our site is nowhere to be found. Check out the #1 result (has been for months now), a suspicious website with no content on the homepage except for explicit pictures of minor girls. I guess it's more relevant to "fashion baby" than an actual baby fashion site they punished. Nice going.
Hello,
First my Adsense ads serving has been removed from my blog ezuca.com because Adsense judged one of my post containing sexual material however it was just simple listing of clever, creative and appealing ads no more no less! Ads from very famous companies that are broadcasted to the entire world daily reaching out to millions of us! How Adsense deems it as sexually material content I will never understand. Anyways I deleted the post but Adsense still ignores my petition to re-enable Adsense ad servicing on my blog.
And now comes Google Penguin update to finish me over! Just 2 days ago I used to get around 5000 visitors every day! Today it didn't even reach 500 visitors! Why??! What did I do wrong to deserve this? NOTHING! I post almost daily articles on my blog which are unique, fresh, relevant, and information rich about design, SEO, science, technology, etc.
One of my main keywords is "logos" i used to rank position 2 in google images prior to the update and it used to get me 2000 visitors this keyword alone, now it is nowhere to be seen!
What's going on guys? I understand you are continuously updating your algorithm to fight spammers and crappy sites, but you are also hurting the good guys along!
Pleas look into my blog ezuca.com and kinda reinstate it to where it was before your algorithm update, it always used to be an authority blog please don't take away this from me, I've been working on it so hard daily for the last year or so, I implore you look into my case and kindly fix the massive damage done.
Thank you
Ziad

what's going on ? , I can't believe it , is this the biggest company Google !
" Stop this update now, as users we never want to see this crap content in the top , and as a webmaster .. our sites is dying ?!"
Hello , any one can see this comments ?
@DolphinC
Well said and some may be considering adwords. I suggest buying ads on facebook instead.
I was truly affected by this terribly. I have lost 95% of all my traffic. I've never engaged in ONE spam link or ONE black hat method?
This update is a complete and utter shambles! You guys at Google surely must now realise this?
I can understand the need to reduce web spam but surely not at the expense of getting good, relevant search results?
I never thought I would see the day where Google became a terrible search engine but that day is now upon us. Congratulations guys!
I keep waiting for Google to fix this as it is obviously not working as it is supposed to.
I worked for years and did everything by Googles rules and my websites have lost 60% of their traffic in the last few days. That spells disaster for my income.
That's it for me, I've had it with Google, I am switching to Bing. This type of complete google failure should never have happened!
Just had my first visit from duckduckgo.com!

Terrible drop here also... on April 24 my life changed. -60% drop and doesn't seems to rollback... it's been 5 days now. Come on Google, some blogs with no updates since 3 years are ranking higher than me... is this a joke?
I blame the indian SEO's who got LAZY and ARROGANT, thinking they can just spam their way to success. The sad part is that they sometimes can and do.
@google: when I search for 'termite inspection San Diego', I am looking for a termite company, NOT a 'news' article from 2008 about an entomologist (whatever that is?!?!)
Fix your search results, they suck!
@kingsborne - this is probably what you're looking for...sorry, Google is a little jacked up right now...here ya go - https://duckduckgo.com/?q=termite+inspection+San+Diego%5C
I can't believe that Google is not fixing this horrific update. Do they not check their own search engine?
I always wondered if Google would SCREW it up and lose market share but never thought it was possible. Well they (Matt Cutts) did it.
I have been working with Google ranking sites and promoting PPC for years and now they have stabbed me in the back. I have brought more than $1,000,000 in revenue to Google by helping local clients set up PPC and now most of my sites LOST dropped off the 1st page!!!
Why Google??? You bite the hand that feeds you!!!
Explain to me just one site. www.networkmarketing.co.uk was ranked #3 on Google.co.uk for 3 years and now it's no where to be found. WHY???
WE NEED ANSWERS MATT.
Wake up!!! Respond to us!!!
Great article you should read:
http://gizmodo.com/5875571/google-just-made-bing-the-best-search-engine
I've used Google for 12 years. I've always thought their updates were great.
I'm seriously considering another search engine.
I'm smart enough to figure out this recent update had NOTHING to do with spam... it had to do with penalizing people who figured out how to rank to the top of Google!
Think about it! Google has board room meetings and they realize that when people find out how to get to the top of Google they MUST do something because they lose ad revenue.
So instead of being true to their mission of providing best possible user search experience, they begin making decisions based on profit.
But they went too far! This update actually removed a LOT of great websites that should actually be at the top and put crappy websites in their place.
Here's the lesson Google needs to learn before they die a slow death:
A company can't keep growing and growing... every company is designed to grow to a certain point and then stabilize.
STOP trying to increase your profits and go back to what made you great in the first place!
Just because people have figured out how to get to the top of Google is NOT a bad thing... most people who take the time to do it are providing GREAT content.
It's wrong what you've done with this recent update.
Totally wrong!
From ALL the sites I've seen removed from Google search they are still there in Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo.com.
Why?
Because those search engines are NOT being unethical.
Wow... it's amazing how trust can be lost so quickly.
For 10 years you had my trust... now overnight you lost it.
But who really cares? You probably got what you wanted... more profit.
I have read this post. collection of post is a nice one ..that am doing website designing company chennai india and website development company chennai india. That I will inform about your post to my friends and all the best for your future posts..

Haha, guess it means Matt and friends' manual penalties/exceptions will be under scrutiny. Good, either be transparent or give space to others who are, and have less power that you can abuse.
I believe the problem is causedby the two faces of Google. One side is revenue hungry and the other side trying to keep searches relevant. I have written and posted numerous aricles five years ago. It is amazing over the past three years how many sites have been created with the sole purpose of placing either Google Adwords of Yahoo PPC links on the sites. There friends, relatives and I am sure their employees click often. I guess that is human nature to survive. I am sure they are still clicking on their sites and Google and Yahoo are collecting the money. This is BIG money not just a few thousand dollars. The material creator who posted relative content on a few sites five years ago is now being call "webspammer" since hundreds of people copied their content to drive Google and Yahoo Ad delivery on it. Simple take out the sites who sole purpose is to post Google and Yahoo Ads. Also create an enforce Google Adwords and Adsense policies that are consistent with Google SEO principles. We all can see that Google.com is hiding the ADWORDS by reducing the opacity of the ADWORDS area and reducing texting indicating the ADWORDS are Ads. I am sure I am not the only webmaster that mistakingly clicked on our own ad since I thought is was organic. Everyone want to blame someone else. Spam is cause by Google and Yahoo paid ads. Why else woudl people create these spam sites. I am looking for Batman and Robin to get me back into Google for a few keywords. Back to the batcave Robin to counteract the Penguin.
@vasanthi,
Can't believe you are spamming this thread (2 posts above this one). How moronic!
Do you really think putting spam comments on blogs after this "Penguin update" is a good idea? Some people never learn...
Matt....Do us all a favor and correct this....Don't let your ego get in the way.
the joke site python-hosting.com which features the content rich 'OK' only ! is not the top google SERP for keyword 'python hosting'...
About Turn! Before users start leaving google in droves.
Yahoo answer page and fold.com bookmarking have more relevant content than any websites? What a joking with Google search.Always I get some page on first or second page for any search term which have not any relevance content. Really google joking with us...
Is it Blog Commenting still works after Google Web Spam Update.?
Looking forward to seeing a positive change in search results. Hopefully you guys deem my content as rockin' as well!
We actively work our site with great customer service and valuable content, yet we are now pushed to the back of the Google bus while websites that are hardly monitored are sent to the top.
Rewarding companies that do nothing to market their sites while eliminating those that do seems anti-American and really bad for searching customers.
Now, sites that look like the lights are out and nobody's home are ranking great and the real customer service providers are suffering.
This update clearly has not worked, I'm not going to post links but google is getting negative press all over the place for it. It's supposed to target web spam but what it's actually done in several fields is put the spammy garbage on the top and the unique sites that provide a great user experience on the bottom. I'm sure that's not the case everywhere but it is in a lot of areas. Google will have to fix this fast, I expect some news of this today being that today is Monday. They are starting to lose people to other search engines because the content google provides with this penguin update is no longer relevant. I see a lot of single paragraph spam sites/blogs on the top now.

Hey guys,
I buy your books about how to promote a site in a ethical manner. I spend money and TIME to make my sites SEO friendly, to create original and interesting content. I follow your advise in on-page and off-page optimization. I trust in YOU ALL as SEO Professionals and Google Ambassadors.
Now guess what? I discover that all white-hat seo techniques that you promote in your books are terrible wrong!! Now your SEO Books worth nothing !!
I think is your obligation now to take a public stand about Google Penguin Update. Is your moral obligation to the thousands of people who have bought your seo books and had faith in you!

Since the Penguin update there have been far too many legitimate websites hit. I have searched for so many terms over the last few days and found on many many occasions that exact match domains with empty sites and stacks of same anchor text links are ranking No1 for competitve search terms.
There are countless irrelevant searches showing results. I looked for jet ski in Gold Coast and the top result was Easy Jet, ie irrelevant. I undertstand the need to clean up the searches but seriously too many people have been unfairly hit by this IMO.
No, it has not affected me but I feel for the people who put time and effort to build up a site the way that Google has told us to do in the past only to be smacked out of touch for what appears to be no reason to be replaced my sites displaying nothing but apache server screen.
Please for the sake of these people, sort it out.
I cannot believe google which used to be the king of search engines.. now is returning the most mediocre type of results in their page 1 rankings..
I always use to be a fan of google.. being a professional web developper and internet marketer, i am deeply disappointed with google this time.
Some of the sites i have developped has vanished on google.. not just that, if you look at those sites that has replaced them (some youtube videos, facebook add pages and some other nonesense webpages)
I hope google can fix this in time so people wont have to go over to yahoo and bing.
Wasiim
(Zend Certified Engineer & CIW )
Another example of Google's "relevant search results".
Google for 'cars' - you will see "Actor searches for Cars" with pictures from Larry the Cable Guy and Tony Shalhoub (Monk) on the front page.
Ridiculous.
It's time to move to yahoo/bing.. matt cutts please check my websites http://www.singaporetourpackage.com/ http://www.thailandtourpackage.net and tell me about faults and mistake that i have made. You violating yourself your system and claim to other who only follow your method.
This update makes no sense to provide quality content. Most of my high quality pages are burried down to 4 - 5 pages. All I can see is crappy YouTube videos and low quality sites taking top positions..
I have been deeply disappointed with you Google. Please revert back !
It was a serious update by google. Google made so hard to get better ranking with this update. I was shocked with I checked my ranking.
Well, it's clear that Google just f#cked up. Too many good sites were killed, just read the comments above.
But it's not the worst point. The worst thing here is that Google drawns in its hypocrisy. They declare 'we do everything for better search results', but in fact all they want is more money from Adwords. Come on, people, it's obvious: they don't want us to create good content, nor do white SEO, nor to improve usability etc. They just want us to go to Adwords and pay THEM, pay Google! Not to copywriters, not to SE-optimizators (even 'white hat'), not to usability specialists... Don't you see that even good sites with great content were filtered and got down? They're trying to say: 'forget about good content, about interesting and good-looking sites, just give us your money!'
So.... you say that you want good content above the fold? Well Matt, what about these three Adword customers? They really don't have any content at all! let alone above the fold!
http://www.cheapcaribbean.com/
No content above the fold, pays for adwords
http://www.expedia.com/
no content above the fold, pays for adwords
http://bookit.com/
No content above the fold, pays for adwords
I was ranked between number 2 and 4 for 9 months for the search term that brought these sites up in Google search! I do not pay for adwords, only do white hat and no spamming, (I did find yesterday that about 10 sites that stole my content!!) I have good content above the fold, and on the bottom of every page on my site! I am not going to list my site here because to be honest with you, I don not trust Google anymore!
So.... when the little guy starts to compete and there are in my best guess well over a million sites that where affected here, you shoot them down! Because they are getting free visits from you and not paying for Adwords!
My site was built with weeks of reading and rereading Google Webmaster tools, I Did My Site The Way You Told Me Too!
I have not made a single dollar for almost a week, nothing!! I have 3 kids and a wife that all depend on the income from our online travel agency!
Fix It Matt!
Something is really wrong, because this is not something that users want.Look at the first position to a small town Podgora. This domain is not alive for months.

During 4 years I have brought up my weblog (WordPress) as if it were my child. I've invested a lot of love and time. My website has died in April 2012. I have lost 60-70% of traffic. It hurts me and discourages me. This is really a slap in the face. Is that the way Google treats the blog scene? I would say anything if you had forewarned me (for example in webmaster tools). This is not the way to deal with people who invest a lot of love and time into a Web project. RIP www.linkorama.ch April 2012!
This update sucks, sucks and sucks!!!
You are killing the search engines by this.
Please tell me that Google is hacked by a pro hacker to believe you!!!
What is those crappy pages ranking on page 1 now?
as example check for any product review and see who ranks first? Pages for affiliates that have no idea about the product but real reviews are killed!!!
Did I say that this update suck?
Dear Folks
Here it is with as many facts and as little emotion as I can do.
I have two web sites. Number 1 is chelationstory.com. This web site is 6 years old page rank 2 or 3 depending on the season. For most of the last six years the site has been listed by its major keywords (4 to 5) on page one or two most of the time. Other minor keywords on page one or two all the time. On April 23rd it disappeared. This has happened before when a new algo comes out I drop to page 4 or 5 but within a day or two it has always bounced back to page one or two. Not this time. This is a 170 page site all original copy written by me. The entire site is on one subject and the things people can do to fix the problem of bad circulation in arteries and veins. The site has adsense, one ad per page, has a couple of affiliates ads on the site and my own products. The site is still indexed but nowhere to be found for any keyword.
My other site is antioxidants-anti-aging-super-foods.com another health site which is four years old containing 301 pages of original content. This site has my own products a adsense ad on some pages and an affiliate ad or two scattered around. It two has disappeared. Ironically on April 15th one of my major keywords reached page one again since losing page one in the may 5, 2011 algo change. On April 20th 2 more keywords reached page one. On April 23rd the entire site disappeared.Even very minor keyword rank disappeared.
As far as I know I practice "white" practices. Both of these sites offer tons of well researched information unlike about.com and wikipedia. Both offer mediocre information and very little of that. But in the case of about.com they have 5 pages of information on my subject plus every possible adsense ad allowed all above the fold. There is actually more ad space by measurement than content on the whole page. What is wrong with this picture. These five pages have always ranked above my 170 pages. The only reason they rank page one that I can determine by observation is they have millions of pages and millions of links and that makes them a "quality?' site.
You state your position as one that is trying to improve your search offerings to readers. I guess then that your definition and mine are different which is to be expected since we both have selfish self interest in this matter.
Since I have been one of your favorite sites over six and four years in competition with millions of pages, I feel like a jilted spouse. However, I will probably get over it and I doubt if you have any concern about me anyway. I always look for the positive and am awaiting the blessings I will receive from this experience. There is always good in the bad. It has been a nice run and who knows, I certainly don't, maybe my sites will come back. I am not going to try anything new because I have run out of ideas on how to please the algo. M. Cutts keep saying just produce good stuff and the rest will follow. I guess I do not know what good stuff is. I will miss helping others. Have a great day.
In your run at dominating the internet, search, social and all the rest of the services I say good luck. Here is one tip. You may not be able to accomplish it for it would be I know difficult. Some of the best information and helpful people are the small site owners concentrating on one subject. The big huge sites might make you more money, probably do, but from what I have seen in my eight years on the web in business the small sites offer more and better information. The difficulty is separating the good from the bad. I can see you definitely have a ways to go.
Gracias!!

Really this is interesting. Mean we need to focus on Fresh and Unique content and Relevant website to our keywords and website.
This is best solution to get bonus from Google.
Very happy with the change. I hope the next one addresses links that are in the source code but you can't see when css is enabled - a modern day twist on cloaking. :)
Do not use Googles form to complain about penguin. Instead do what everyone else is doing, report Google to the FTC, Google is currently in the process of getting sued by the FTC for this kind of nonsense and any input from you can assist in google getting destroyed in court. I've already sent them hundreds of screenshots I've taken of Google deleting complaints off this thread as well as web master forums, can't wait till you have your day in court Google. The US government is going to destroy your scam operation. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/27/technology/google-antitrust-inquiry-advances.html?_r=4&pagewanted=1&hp
As a SEO, i would LOVE if it were the case that Penguin would eliminate all possibilities of "gaming" Google - aka making the more than tedious process of SEO and link building not necessary anymore.
I would be the luckiest man on Earth, because it would mean saving 80% of work.
Problem: I don't believe this. I don't believe in the tale that sites are ranking "themselves" now simply from "good content".
If anything, i think that the Google results get more and more biased towards so called "authority" sites - but NOT making it easier now to rank well without any link building and SEO as some might believe.
G.
My site www.advancedwaterfiltration.com.au has lost its page rank with the penquin update. Please fix this google
Not much else is left to be said here. There have been some serious mistakes in rolling out this algorithm and some things will need to be modified.
The relative silence from google should come of no surprise to anyone. The FTC is watching now.
google has given up the shark..time for something fresh and new...duckduckgo.com
Why is this site ranking 1st for the term "buy and sell websites" ?????????????
http://www.buyandsellph.com
Total garbage!
Wow! No other post in at least the last year has come close to generating so many comments. A whopping 743 so far, many of which are negative. Dear Google, the public, many of which have just had their livelihoods taken away from them, have been kind enough to take the time to let you know that your latest update is a failure, please be kind enough to take the time to respond to some of the concerns that have been raised and let everyone know what action you are going to take rectify the current poor state of your search results.
SEOer VietNam.
In my country, all seoer in VietNam have a conference. We think "Another step to reward high-quality sites" is not good.
From 2004 we are a group of people working for Better Internet (of Bangladesh). We helped people to optimize their website (design, load speed, good content). We did no backlink or SEO (so called) or blackhat. After panda update all our sites were good. Cause we were confident. People helped us by linking back (naturally)
After this April update we are hopeless. Most of the SERP of Bangladesh full of spam like result. No related content.
For example : at 7.5.2012 SSC exam result will be published.
search : SSC Exam Result 2012 Bangladesh
and see...90% result is not relevant. Full of keyword stuffing. No SSC result there. So students will be hopeless.
Our site http://ssc.resultx.info developed after a team with hundreds of volunteers. The team help student for admission, result, scholarship free of cost. Most of the time we support them by live phone and live chat. The money we get from adsense is very very less (total $1/day from all resultx.info pages) and used to help the students.
Our site was 1st page of google. Now it is outside.
1st page is full of spam content.
We wish google will solve similar issues.
NB: http://resultx.info is helping millions of students. Hundreds of volunteers there to help them. This is not keyword spam or money making site.
this update still not good enough, my question is why a copy paste content website can get a great rank but my original content website down?. I can prove and i can make some sample if you want to see that, i am a SEO worker, some website copy my content and then his site got #1 on the keyword that i want but my website position gone (because the posting url change to tag url).
I loss lot of traffic because of this update (lot of keyword position gone). You should learn how to compare between original website and copy paste website.
And about high quality backlink building, nobody 100% understand about that including you right?. I was doing SEO since google come to my country (Indonesia), my comment is "just back to nature" don't to many change because it's not 100% good for you and us, make a strong rule, and more confident to promote your term and condition to all people, i see Google when Google change something but they don't know what is the qualification of that change, the change the algorithm, but they don't know the best rule and how to survice from that . Your compititor will defeat you if you always like that (your compititor soon is twitter, because people more happy on that and they can found what they looking for, just need to ask and other people will answer) :)...
Thanks,

4. Why we can see related post on your single post url ?
5. Why there is no recent post on your sidebar? (Google said on their rule, make a website usefull and easy for visitor)
6. We need informative and usefull post, man that's not right (sample this post) just make me confuse, no solution about this case.
If you answer because it's Google blog and this is a quality blog, wow i will resign from my job as a SEO worker :) . Please answer this and let other people know, do not delete this comment please :)
Wow amazing, Panda and penguin really change many things, and also anger many people.
I hope for better result and quality in google search results. and then also increase my website pages rank ;p
Thank you for great posting.
Second Hand Vans For Sale
This is by far the worst result I've seen...
Another user complained that they used to rank well for the term "fashion baby" for their children's clothing site.
Now, the number 1 result is basically a child-porn site !
Terrible. Simply terrible.
There's no excuse for this and now I'm losing all trust in Google. How can I let me kids use Google if I don't trust the results. I'll be changing the default home pages on all my home PCs.

This is especially true for myself also. I cant understand how this is possible given that Ive implemented the rel="author" tags and have verified my site within Googles Webmaster tools, Google Plus, AND Google Analytics, as the rightful owner to the original content!
What gives?
I run a legitimate business and this is by far the worst thing Google has done against me in ages. I will not switch to AdWords.
Number one for fashion baby http://fashion-baby.info/
This is discusting, you've really defeated webspam.
In the last 3 weeks hits on my pages have fallen
off by over 50 per cent. I don't use any underhand methods and my content is I believe good. At any rate, I get plenty of appreciative comments.
Is the decline in hits a temporary blip that will disappear in the future?
After 750+ comments, it's hard to believe that Matt has the time to update his Twitter account, but he can't reply to this thread and address the concerns of hundreds of webmaster posting in this thread.
The "Google Penguin" update should have included the ability of webmasters to devalue bad links within their "Webmaster Tools" account. That way, this update could have impacted webspam, negative SEO, and if could have given webmasters with legitimate content, the ability to rise back to their rankings in a short time.
I won't buy ads on Adwords until this update is rolled back. I won't be forced into buying ads. I'd rather see some of my sites burn and no longer add to your quarterly profits.
Search for make money for beginners....u will find the best site on top....can u guess........this time Google really rocks...it's the indication by google that use only PPC or adwords....
U will find this blank blogspot page..On top myboyboyboy.blogspot.com/
Hey Matt,
If the emphasis is on rewarding high quality websites, then why does our website, which is extremely high quality, filled with loads of unique high quality content, fresh regular sales and special offers, completely disappear from the rankings, while affiliates with no unique content, reguring cr*p come up above us ?
Babythings4u.co.uk
ARGGG !
you have a add spam content your all sites values down this type of algorithm good one.
@AndreeCrist
Looking at yours and other examples where a drop in rankings has been experienced it appears due to "over-optimisation"(I hate that phrase) of your anchor text keywords.
Run your site through MajesticSEO for anchors to that page and you will see that 20% of your keywords for your homepage are for "buy prams and strollers" which I guess are one of the terms you have dropped rankings. General consensus is that these keywords should be under 10%.
I know your pain as I have also had the same, people link to our site for what we sell. Its a simple product and now we are being stung for having people outside link to us for a key phrase more than others.
Oh well... not sure where this is going. But I do think a lot of very good sites that been penalised unfairly for this - so what if people link to us for one key phrase more than others, surely its the quality of the site where the link comes from and its context that makes the difference.
I could be wrong... but then I guess theres no one from Google to comment otherwise. I want my rankings back... :o(
Is anyone at Google going to address the comments here?
...anyone at all?
I have a blog, laptops-specs.blogspot.com which has been affected by the latest google update. My blog contents are original and has good quality. Since April 24th, my blog traffic has dropped drastically. When I searched for my popular keywords in Google, my blog didn't listed there. Before it , my blog is ranked in top five and those keywords had given me huge traffic. I never use any illegal tactics to improve my blog rankings.
Another people's blogs/websites which have copied contents from my blog can rank higher on Google in most keyword. I' m very disappointed to see that a low quality websites/blogs can rank higher in Google. This will affect Google users. They will get lower quality contents on Google search result page.
I hope that Google can fix this mistake, so my blog which has good contents can ranked well in Google and Google uses can get better quality sites on search result page.
Matt,
That's a great start. Our website has been scraped of original content for over 3 years onto spam and link network blog sites and article farms.
We were giving up hope that this would ever be nipped in the bud.
Great news!
Matt, this has destroyed many innosent people and their livelyhood, we hired a company out of india in good faith to do our link building and it turns out they were doing gray hat seo and now we are getting pounished from it and we had no idea what gray hat was until a family friend told us, the best you can do matt is to quit playing around with the search, youre hurting people and making results worse.
Goodbye Google, hello Yahoo. I cant even find my favorite sites anymore. You just destroyed yourself along with the US economy.
I have checked all the other search engines and their results are all normal and I can find all my favorites. Simple solution is to stop using Google until they can correct the disaster that they have created. Pass it on.
Well this is the way to seo your new website. After you made your new web site, do not build any links or do not do any advertising if you want to rank well in google. you must wait till people find your site some day in some way. If they wouldn't find your web site within about 10 years then you must start a new web site, If they found and if they would love the content they will link, but you must tell the people not to use the same anchor text. You must be able to control that percentage. Content is not important, you can put any garbage, duplicate or whatever. The important this is avoid building links.
I do not understand. My website sells a product. My main competition are websites that exist to get traffic from people looking for my product but they do not actually sell a product. With this latest change my traffic went down by almost half. I do not participate in any weird or manipulative practices. It is easy to see my competitions manipulation of the system. Google keeps telling me to write good content and I have. Once people actually find me they stay on the site for a long time and purchase. Google seems to reward the sites that do exactly what they keep telling me to not do. I do not get it??
Hello Matt Cutts,
If Google made "another step to reward high-quality sites" recently, so how can you explain that Google deleted from search index old qualitative websites with unique content but high ranks copypasted and other fake sites?
For example, my 7 y.o. website http://drugs-about.com/ was deleted from Google search index after these "another steps to reward high-quality sites" but its fake copies (such as drugsabout dot com, thedrugsinfo dot com, catalog dot md ) with fully stealed content have very good ranking in Google and any reports and requests to Google grom me had no results. Why?
Best regards,
Andrei M.
Hi Matt,
Good to see this post though the update of penguin is already UP and most of low quality sites and low quality campaigns that were being done for sites (either by agencies or individuals) have see a drop in rankings as they were not following Google Quality guidelines.
My questions is, when you say "White Hat SEO (or no Search Engine Optimization at all)", does that means SEO is not useful any more ? Secondly, what kind of links are yet good links for sites after penguin and Panda 3.5 ?
Please fix the last update. Spam is still on top and honest businesses are the ones that are suffering.
You people have got to quit whining. There may be 2 or 3 people on this whole page who actually have a right, but the vast majority are people who tried to game the system. I was reading one guy's comments below who complained that he hand wrote all his own reviews but was getting punished. LOL.. really?!! You hand wrote a few hundred or thousand reviews?! FYI.. that's gaming the system! You didn't really review hundreds and thousands of products, did you? Backlinkers, spammers and all that are being punished and rightfully so. It is sad that the system will now be turned against those who are legit. I'm reading posts on seo forums that it's happening already.. spamming links out for competitor sites. But hopefully, G has a plan for that too.
In the mean time, understand that Google is a search engine for the 99.9% out there who don't employ SEO.. and they could care less about the recent changes. The .1% ,who are marketers and of that, 3% who are actually affected, don't mean squat.
Build a quality site. Quit crying.

I want to ask in because google algorithm update that said it was more intense
My blogger friend and pilot, I created an article with the url http://www.anzaa.info/2012/05/cara-ciuman-bibir-agar-lebih-berkesan.html and a top 1 google
a few hours later my friend was copy the entire contents of my article with http://ojelhtc.blogspot.com/2012/05/cara-ciuman-bibir-agar-lebih-berkesan.html url, and he finished top article 1, is my article disappeared ..
What is your response?
keyword Cara Ciuman Bibir Agar Lebih Berkesan
This site is still number one for fashion baby
http://fashion-baby.info/
It's not even LEGAL
You removed my last comment with the link! Yet your search bots obviously think it's great content.
What are you doing about your rubbish search results
@crazynuttyguy are you happy to be seeing sites like the above?
Is anyone from Google going to make a follow up on Matt Cutts last post?
Five Years on a Website down the drain!! Google nuked it with the God forsaken Penguin Update . NO reason Given. Just Gone. never to recover.
How has Google done nothing about this yet? The results I am getting are absolutely horrible.
I have done all kinds of keyword searches related to my niche and its guaranteed that within the top 10 results I am going to see low quality blogs or other sites or sites with absolutely no content. How does a site with zero content get in the top 10!! Obviously something is broken. In 2012 that should not be possible.
Also, when I search for the exact keywords in my domain, my site is nowhere in the top 20 but an affiliate site which simply redirects to my site is at no. 2. That makes no sense! This is just one of the many examples of the completely horrible results I've been receiving.
Seriously Google, what are you waiting on? You completely broke the search results. You make billions of dollars in profits per year. Why is it so hard to fix this obvious problem!
This update really made more mess then good. Many good sites dissepeared and were replaced by trash. This "penguin" doesnt work.
Wow Matt, there is absolutely no doubt in mind what "bad SEO" an agency did for me was and the incredible negative impact it had on my rankings.
Prior to hiring this "agency" to syndicate my articles (On what i later found was an "ALN" blog network or something) my websites disappeared off of the face of your index.
These sites enjoyed decent rankings prior to hiring this agency and were decimated FAR below their original positions, some even at all.
Both of these are exact match domain names (not mine, but close examples: ComputerKeyboard.com, Projectors.com) and don't rank at all for those words and anything related.
No other SEO work was done to build links, so what else could be deemed as 'suspicious'?
I'm ready to start buying these links to my competitions sites, since we are helpless to remove any of these links and there is a definitive negative impact to receiving those. I am 100% convinced this is the new wave of Negative SEO. Google is flat out punishing sites associated with 'bad neighborhoods' instead of ignoring those links.

Im not going to say my site but I was ranking on page one of search results for a popular keyword. My site is 100% original content with no ads at all. Now I don't rank in the top 100 results and there are sites on the first page with the title being "just another wordpress site" which means they are junk or brand new. What gives?
So suddenly my website has vanished from google places..wiped of the map. Look at my website www.cleaningaserviceslasvegas.net and tell me where I have tried to "game google". I was on page 1 for every cleaning keyword, no pushed to page 5 , AND my places acct deleted? Maybe google didnt like what I posted here.. TOO BAD! At this point I dont really care as there isnt anything google can do to me that they havent already done. Duckduckgo.com
Just my two-cents, but again another example of this algorithm change targeting good quality sites ... My mothers blog took a huge dive on april 24th ... http://www.miracleofgarlic.com/
EPIC FAIL.
Google yet again proves that they really aren't about decent searching. Instead, they are all about aggregating personal information, then selling it to the highest spammer--I mean, bidder; then making a dog-and-pony show like this about their obviously skewed results toward the pay sites.
Their search has been broken for weeks, leaving most users with worthless 10-item search results that never change to the second pages, ostensibly because of some allegedly broken code, but most obviously to make sure the spammers get top billing at all costs.
Bye bye, Google: I'm off to Yahoo or Bing.
I thought this update was supposed to help the quality of google search?
After the update I can never find what im looking for. I have permanently switched over to bing!
Google should be ashamed of themselves. So should Matt Cutts. Google is displaying CHILD PORN sites in the #1 position! This makes me sick. Just google "fashion baby" without quots. Bing would never allow this
Oops! Now it's definitely sure that the whole thing gone wrong. BTW why this "rewarded high-quality site" - fashion-baby.info - is even indexed, cached and got a screenshot? It's beyond my mind. It's just sick.
Well, my family should use Bing from now on...
I have some sites that I don't even do any backlink activity but it get penguin??? I don't do any blog network, and other things. I just sit and update article.
the sites survive from panda but not penguin, what's wrong with your system?
Google seems to have this skewed perception that website owners have nothing better to do than sit around sipping caramel lattes, watching oprah and writing articles.
Umm, Matt, not all of us use a personal "blogspot" account to write about seashells and cupcakes.
Some of us are trying to run legitimate businesses.
To you know, pay bills n stuff.
I hope these updates make google searches more refined as well as help good honest website publishers.
Now we can get sandbox easily with SB or Xrummer.
clap clap clap google .

clap clap clap google .
Well keep going in that's way if you want only grandpas and grandma using your search engine
My website used to rank position 3 or 4 on page one for the main keyword in the industry. My website is very informative and expains the product in detail. Now it ranks page 4. On page one you have several websites within my industry that have not more content than for product XYZ please contact us on the telephone number below. Wow I guess this is what Google meant with quality websites, time to focus on Bing and Yahoo
Our site www.digitalreview.ca has been affected and we have lost more than 30% of our site traffic in the last week. We have been online since 2001 and have always managed to rank well because of our content.
What can we do to get the search engine to recognize the value of the content on our site?
